Who Is The Leader On The Field?

    Leadership in Baseball

Baseball is a unique game that can leave one wondering who is the leader on the team. The game of football has the quarterback leading the offensive down the field. The point guide in baseball setting up the next play. With the game of baseball who calls the shots on the field? That would be given to the catcher.

The catcher is positioned behind home plate and facing towards the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field. Thus giving the catcher the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. The catcher also has the responsibility of calling the pitches based on the pitchers abilities and the batter's weakness. Essentially, the catcher controls what happens during the game when the ball is not "in play". Foul tips, bouncing balls in the dirt, and contact with runners during plays at the plate are all events to be handled by the catcher.

A good catcher will spend time with all the pitchers. Understanding each pitchers strengths, their weakness and building a level of trust. Catchers have ability to help a pitchers regain their confidence by calling timeouts and reminding them of their strengths.

A catcher can be considered the quarterback of a baseball team. They should set the tone for the team with their confidence and setting a positive tempo of the game. A good catcher understands each players position and managing the field on a defensive play.

Being a catcher is a tough job not only being the leader of the team but, physically each pitch potentially putting yourself in harms way. Possibly taking a fast ball to the helmet or attempt to tag out a runner at home plate. The position of catcher is a underrated position in baseball is commonly overlooked. For the player that wants to be involved in every pitch of the game, there is not better spot on the field.
